For this project my task was to create a piece of animation which communicated a statistic visually and effectively. I was given statistics based on what foods each household in the UK has been buying from 1974-2009. I examined the trends - a decrease in the consumption of whole milk, a rise in consumption of fresh unprocessed fruit - which led me to see that on the whole, we are buying much healthier foods than we used to. However, the report also argues that obesity is at an all-time high, so we must be doing something wrong. I then began to investigate obesity statistics and found that due to a rise in fast food outlets and a decrease in the distance the average person walks or cycles every day, obesity has literally ballooned in the past 10 years in the UK.
I then took these statistics and set them up in a storyboard which showcased a problem and then a solution. Through using Adobe Illustrator files and kinetic typography I was able to effectively get the message across that ‘just because you eat healthy, doesn’t mean you are healthy.’.
I found this project stimulating in that I had to set and meet my own limitations as I was using completely new software. I also found that through workshops and tutorials I was able to gain skills which I wouldn’t necessarily have if I had been working on my own.
I found it difficult in that like other projects, I changed my approach a few times before I came across a concept which I was happy to work with. Through trial and error, I tested out (and then abandoned) some ideas before coming to my final draft which was a combination of everything that came before it. If i were to do this unit again, I would probably tailor my ideas to my time and ability constrictions, which is what I believe forced me to alter my concept throughout the unit.
Overall, I am happy with the piece of animation I have created in the time given. I believe that my supporting work and my final animation both display a range of capabilities and that I have fully understood the brief.
